Mack and Mabel — main production photograph

My first production leading video in a professional theatre environment — an invaluable introduction to projection design, control integration and the practical limits of projector brightness.

The technical story

Playback and control

We used Resolume as the media server, with cues triggered from the ETC Eos lighting console over OSC (Open Sound Control). This allowed video playback to be integrated into the lighting cue sequence.

Projection system

Enlightened Lighting supplied three projectors: one 12,000-lumen Panasonic on the circle rail and two 5,000-lumen projectors behind the proscenium.

Lessons learnt

The projectors were not bright enough for the production’s needs. This was a formative lesson in projector specification and the importance of considering brightness alongside throw distance, projection surface and stage lighting.
